- Yes, college IS expensive! It is a valuable investment in your future, and your family's future.
- Most educated people end up paying monthly on their student loans, sometimes for years, but that depends on individual circumstances.
- Your ultimate cost of attendance will be thousands of dollars. NO ONE EXPECTS YOU TO PAY IT ALL AT ONCE! Divide it by 10 (some schools allow 12) and figure out your monthly payments.
- Expect to work: full-time this summer will provide you with $4-5,000 to start your year with; part time during school, for networking and to help with miscellaneous costs.
- Look for ways to cut costs: if you are covered by your parent's health insurance, waive the college's health insurance, it will save you $.
- If you are responsible and disciplined, you do not need to fear student loans: only borrow what you will need, pay it off a little at a time while you're in school when you can.
- Consider your anticipated income from your planned career and borrow accordingly. If you'll be a doctor, it makes more sense to borrow more than if you'll be a teacher, for example.
- The government loans are the best deal: lower interest rates, etc. AVOID borrowing from banks or credit cards!
- Now that you are college-bound, lots of credit companies want your business. Do NOT accept a credit card until you have practiced financial responsibility (budgeting, saving) for 6 months to 1 year.
- Then, when you've established financial discipline, and have a steady income, accept one credit card and pay it off every month.
- Managing your student loans responsibly after college can actually help build your credit.
- Your 1st semester/quarter will be your most expensive! Live in the dorm, get the biggest food plan. Then, when you know your college patterns and habits, you can switch it to a less expensive option after that 1st term. Set yourself up for success in your first year by playing it safe.
